Out now: new single Staff Benda Bilili

earth_beat_Staff_Benda_Bilili

In 2009, Staff Benda Bilili, the Congolese group made up of paraplegic street musicians, ignited their conquest of the world with their album, "Très Très Fort". The international media were charmed by their enchanting music, their relentless energy and uplifting optimism. Staff Benda Bilili have become a symbol of triumph over adversity, a true source of inspiration for the increasingly large audiences which fill up their concerts across Europe, Australia and Japan.

Released in movie theatres and on the television, the feature film dedicated to the story of the group has achieved a high level of success, and the album "Très Très Fort" has won many awards.

Staff Benda Bilili have just finished recording their new album, which will be released September of 2012. Titled "Bouger le Monde" ("Make the World Shake"), the album bears witness to the spectacular evolution of the band, and its intent to keep making... the world shake!

The first single from the disc, "Osali Mabe", came out the beginning of this May. Listen to it on Soundcloud.
Rather listen to it live? May 18th they are playing at De Oosterpoort in Groningen and May 19th at Helemaal Melkweg in Amsterdam.

Radio 6 recensie Warsaw Village Band

warsaw_village_band_2012

"De Warsaw Village Band is een uniek gezelschap dat de Poolse cultuur over de grenzen heen tilt, op unieke wijze, gespeeld door jonge (hippe) mensen. Door hun dynamische muzikale aanpak verdwijnt het stoffige imago, dat folkmuziek soms met zich mee draagt en maakt plaats voor bewondering en kippenvel!" Lees hier de hele recensie.

Warsaw Village Band presents new album

earth_beat_warsaw_village_band

May 2012 is the release of ‘Nord’, the new long awaited album of the Warsaw Village Band.
The Warsaw Village Band has the ability to enrich century old traditions with modern elements and please both fans of rock music as a more traditional world music audience. In London they were even called the Polish Pogues!

With the new album ‘Nord’ the band explored the common elements between  the Slavs, the Scandinavians and the aboriginal people of the North. Countries, although very different, who share a long common history. All these divers but yet related musical influences meet for the first time on ‘Nord’. The merge fully shows its potential on the collaborations on the album; it features a song with the Swedish band Hedningarna and also a contribution of Canadian singer-songwriter Sandy Scofield.

Next month the album gets presented live in Holland, Poland, England, Germany and Turkey.

Tourdates Holland:
9 May 2012          Theater de Regentes, Den Haag
10 May 2012        Oosterpoort, Groningen
11 May 2012        Rasa, Utrecht
12 May 2012        Muziekgebouw Frits Philips, Eindhoven

Hanggai Mongolian folk and punk captures the WOMAD spirit

Hanggai Mongolian folk and punk captures the WOMAD spirit

Mar 22nd, 2011 | By Rodney Brown |

TAKE A BOW: Hanggai respond to the crowd at the end of their performance at WOMAD. Photo: Rodney Brown

THESE are the moments you live for – the feelings music can arouse, when the hairs on your neck stand up and pins and needles take control.

That was this reporter’s reaction to Hanggai, a band which captured the essence of WOMAD in New Plymouth at the weekend. The seven piece band that fuses traditional Mongolian folk with punk rock arrived relatively unknown but left the annual world music festival as one the clear crowd favourites. Hanggai shifted seamlessly between the two genres.

They combine string instruments used in folk music, with electric guitar and throat singing, to produce their distinctive sound. The show begins with the low haunting hum of throat singing, otherwise known as overtone singing. At least two of the band members have mastered this technique and it has become a hallmark for them. Back this up with some very smooth guitar and the intro was perfect.

After a short pause, those who were lulled into a sense of tranquillity by the first song were quickly awoken. Thunderous drums and heavy bass pulsated through the crowd, accompanied by the amazing vocals of the lead singer. This immediately had a group at the front of the crowd head banging and jumping. Nobody I spoke to could speak highly enough of them.

It is almost impossible to describe the sound of Hanggai because they capture the sound of a culture unknown to most of us. And for a moment, the crowd was transported to an alien land, where the blood of the great Khans lives on. RODNEY BROWN Newswire New Zealand

New Dutch- Antillean sound!

KiT_bigRGBweb

Curaçao born percussionist Roël Calister is working on a new project that evolved out of his kids show Kuenta i Tambú, called KiT. A band that presents Afro-Antillean rhythms with a the modern contemporary dance vibe. The lucky people that had the chance to see a try-out were all enthusiastic. ‘it’s rare a band brings a completely different sound’ was a recurrent comment.

KiT will be rocking the festivals from may on together with the release of their first single with definite summer hit potential!

March 20th KiT will play the Melkweg as support act for Konono nr.1
